Expect Referrals — And Then Take Action To Generate Them

When generating referrals becomes a standard element of your marketing, you can expect referrals on a regular basis.

It has been said that expectancy is like a magnet. If for example  you attend  networking events without expecting to meet the right sorts of people, then that will be exactly what happens. You will waste a great deal of time and leave the event very frustrated.

Self-Fulfilling Prophecies

The concept of self-fulfilling prophecies is well known in the world of human behavior.  According to Wikipedia,A self-fulfilling prophecy is a prediction that directly or indirectly causes itself to become true.”

In ordinary people talk, this translates into “Be careful what you ask for, you might just get it.”

These prophecies can generate both positive and negative outcomes.

Like me, you probably know people love adversity and problems.  These are the folks who love to claim that if it wasn’t for bad luck they wouldn’t have any luck.  Most of their conversation is about problems–their own, those of people they know and very often problem-plagued individuals whose stories they have heard or read about.

As a result, people who love adversity and problems get more of what they expect: misfortune and hardship.

For present purposes, if you don’t expect referrals…you won’t get any.

Expect Referrals As A Self-Fulfilling Prophecy

Motivational experts and optimists alike love the positive potential of self-fulfilling prophecies. Many like to quote Henry Ford:  “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.”

In other words, if you expect referrals, you will get them.

A final cautionary word.  As effective as it can be, simply expecting referrals is seldom if ever enough to generate the continuous flow of new business.

To generate the sustainable flow of new business that we want, need and yes even deserve, it is essential to do more than just expect referrals.  Specific and focused action is needed to generate all those welcome referrals.
