Like me, you have probably been totally confused by some one considered an excellent communicator.

On the other hand, we have all experienced the ‘aha’ of a new insight discovered through the message of some one not normally touted as an excellent communicator.

Think of some one considered an excellent communicator in your profession or industry. What communication skills does that individual consistently demonstrate?

Excellent Communication Skills Are Defined By Circumstances

When communicating with colleagues and peers, there is a different standard of excellence than when communicating with contacts, prospects and clients. The content will be more technical, focused on the nitty grittty of one or more single processes. In this situation the communicator and her audience presumably share a common basic level of understanding. As a result, there will be lots of technical talk, jargon and in-jokes and stories that represent one issue or another.

On the other hand, communications with contacts, prospects and clients tend to be more informational and educational in nature. These people will be less interested in the technical aspects of the service and more interested in how the service will help them.

The communication is a key component of marketing professional services and generating more new business. Ideally, excellent communication skills will help build relationships with potential clients and referral sources.
